Art and the Sacred: A Conversation with Pastor Mark Opgrand
Year after twelvemonth, century upon century, the history of Western art was more or less indistinguishable from the spiritual history of Europe. From cathedrals to frescoes, rose windows to stained glass, art was expected, even required to requite life and vocalism to the famous stories of the Hebrew and Christian Bibles, offer "route maps" that helped to guide people on the spiritual path. Today, art and the sacred often appear to live in irreconcilable universes, pursuing entirely different goals, speaking languages that each find indecipherable, even offensive. Using their own experience every bit well as images from "Opening the Drapery," Opgrand and Peterson search for the common ground that joins art and faith, Prototype and the Discussion. The plan series ends with Peterson reading a brief essay/story about discovering sublime beauty, in the form of a deer chewing grass in his back yard, every bit revealed in the title essay of his 2018 volume "I Give My Eyes…"

On the Road to Damascus: The "Call"
Special guest: painter, poet, and curator Helen Mirkil
Helen Mirkil is a graduate of both the BFA and MFA programs at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Her paintings are included in numerous prestigious public and private collections, and take been exhibited at the Berman Museum of Art, Mary Washington University, the Michener Fine art Museum, the Delaware Fine art Museum, and the Butler Institute of American Art. As well a prolific and achieved poet, MIrkil's first book of verse, "The Sower on the Cliffs," was published by Book Arts Press.
Plan DESCRIPTION:
John Weiss (1941-2017) was a formidable figure in gimmicky art photography—a chief teacher who ran the MFA photography program at the University of Delaware for more than 3 decades. Weiss was too a gifted photographer of people and places, with an instinct for the rhythm and music of visual pattern also equally an uncanny power to reveal the deeper layers of homo experience. In this starting time of three programs, Brian H. Peterson and his married woman, painter and poet Helen Mirkil, read excerpts from a 2011 conversation between Weiss and Peterson recorded at Weiss's home in Elkton, Maryland, and published in Peterson 2018 book "I Give My Eyes…" First with their own complex journeys on the creative path, the conversation somewhen arrives at Weiss's personal "road to Damascus" experience, when he collapsed in front of a photo at a gallery opening and then committed himself to a life in artistic photography.
